Description
Flexibility is essential for figure skaters, especially nowadays, as the IJS is placing
challenging demands on the quality of spirals and spins for both male and female skaters. Good flexibility helps skaters to get the most out of their programmes, reduces the risk of injury and contributes to the impression of flowing, effortless performance.
Robin Cousins commented on the important of flexibility, especially for girls, in the January 2008 issue of iSKATE magazine: ‘Skating has become more like ballet in what is required of the body. Girls need to be able to turn themselves inside out and be extremely flexible. What was asked of show skaters 10-15 years ago is now needed. [...] It’s a tough call for any skater physically nowadays to be able to deliver what is expected. And they keep making it even harder.’
Anna Matyskina’s series of webinars on flexibility and stretching for figure skaters aims to address this challenge. In her step-by-step guide to stretching, Anna teaches coaches how to increase their students’ range of motion in a safe way, using a variety of stretching techniques.
During the course Anna introduces several dozen exercises illustrated by photographs and diagrams. She also talks of her experience of working with international-level skaters and how her methods helped to improve their skating results.
